Just over a decade ago, architectural firms began using LEDs en masse in commercial projects, but certainly not without some apprehension. Sure, the “new” lighting would save electricity consumption for clients by extending the life of the bulbs over many hours, but the color temperatures were cold and the brightness seemed insufficient.
Fast forward 13 years and the outlook for the LED lighting industry has never been brighter. According to a report by Zion Research, the global LED lighting market was valued at approximately $20 billion in 2014 and is expected to reach approximately $42.5 billion by 2020.
The reason is simple: For architectural applications, LEDs are both decorative and functional because they can be used to light fountains, pools, gardens and statues. In addition, LEDs brighten up building exteriors and landscaping, as well as enhance visibility and safety on mixed-use and commercial properties.

EMBRACE A “LESS IS MORE” MENTALITY
While customers may think they want a plethora of options, when it comes to LEDs and how they will function in a certain type of space, more options can be overwhelming. Lighting designers and architects will have to hone in on carefully curated lighting systems, colors and other aesthetic options to help clients get exactly the right type of lighting when, where and how they need it.
BRING THE OUTSIDE IN
Infusing a space with daylight will continue to be a trend as clients and consumers understand how light impacts health and wellness. To that end, new applications of daylight simulation will be seen in corporate settings.
LAYER THE LIGHTING
Life isn’t one dimensional, and neither is lighting. Spaces featuring a variety of LED lighting types (e.g., wall washers, pendants and pin point) can create ambient texture and glow in any room, resulting in flexible, dynamic spaces.
GO GREEN TO SAVE SOME GREEN
In an era of green building and a generation that embraces environmentally friendly buildings, architecture, and work and living spaces, the LED market will continue to pay for itself and quantify its performance—be it in the classroom, locker room or office, helping architects and designers cater to their clients’ needs.
SMARTEN UP
Connected lighting applications and fixtures will brighten the way this year. Being compatible with key voice-automated, hands-free controls will be key in developing smarter, experience-based lighting.
