Construction Executive’s Top Construction Accounting Firms™
Methodology for Construction Executive's 2025 Top Construction Accounting Firms™
CE developed The Top 50 Construction Accounting Firms™ ranking by asking more than 700 U.S. construction accounting firms to complete a survey. The data collected included: 1) 2024 revenues from the firm’s construction practice; 2) number of CPAs in the firm’s construction practice; 3) percentage of the firm’s total revenues derived from its construction practice; 4) number of states in which the firm is licensed to practice; 5) year in which the construction practice was established; and 6) number of AEC clients served during fiscal year 2024. The ranking was determined by an algorithm that weighted the aforementioned factors in descending order of importance. For more information, contact surveys@magazinexperts.com.

Construction Accounting Services: Frequently Asked Questions
What are construction accounting services?
Construction accounting services are specialized accounting, tax, audit and advisory services designed around how contractors actually earn revenue — job by job, over months or years, with retainage, change orders and bonding requirements attached to every contract.
Unlike general business accounting, which measures performance across a single company-wide profit and loss statement, construction accounting measures profitability at the contract level and ties revenue recognition to work actually performed. A full-service engagement typically covers:
- Job costing and WIP reporting — tracking labor, materials, equipment and burden against each contract
- Revenue recognition under ASC 606 and the percentage-of-completion method
- Audited, reviewed or compiled financial statements prepared to surety and lender expectations
- Multi-state and local tax compliance for crews that cross jurisdictional lines
- Equipment and capital purchase planning, including depreciation elections
- Overhead allocation and labor burden rate development
- Cash flow forecasting around billing cycles and retainage release
- Succession planning, ownership transition and M&A support
How is construction accounting different from standard business accounting?
The core difference is timing: a contractor recognizes revenue as a job progresses rather than when it delivers a finished product, which means the financial statements depend on estimates that change every month.
That single difference cascades through the entire back office.
| Area | Standard business | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue timing | When goods ship or services are delivered | Over time, as costs are incurred against total estimated cost |
| Unit of profit | The company, or a product line | The individual contract — every job is its own profit center |
| Key asset | Inventory | Work in progress, costs in excess of billings, retainage receivable |
| Estimates | Relatively few | Cost-to-complete is re-forecast on every open job, every period |
| Tax footprint | Usually fixed to one or two locations | Nexus follows the crews — often dozens of state and local jurisdictions |
| Statement audience | Owners, lender | Owners, lender, and the surety, which drives bonding capacity |
| Labor cost | Wages plus standard benefits | Fully burdened rates, prevailing wage, certified payroll, union fringes |
What services do construction accounting firms provide?
Most construction practices organize around four groups: assurance, tax, advisory, and outsourced accounting.
Assurance and audit
- Audits, reviews and compilations prepared for surety and bank use
- Employee benefit plan audits
- Agreed-upon procedures and overhead rate audits for public work
Tax
- Accounting method selection and change requests (Form 3115)
- Multi-state income, franchise and sales-and-use tax compliance
- Look-back interest calculations on completed long-term contracts
- Credits and incentives, cost segregation, and entity structuring
Advisory
- Surety and bonding credit assistance
- Business valuation, succession planning and ESOP feasibility
- Forensic accounting, claims support and expert testimony
- Mergers and acquisitions, risk management, wealth management
Outsourced and client accounting services (CAS)
- Bookkeeping, payroll and certified payroll reporting
- Monthly WIP preparation and close
- Fractional or outsourced CFO and controller support
- ERP selection and implementation
The Areas of Practice column in the ranking table above maps to these categories — the key directly beneath the methodology note decodes each abbreviation.
What is a WIP schedule, and why do sureties and lenders ask for it?
A work-in-progress (WIP) schedule lists every open contract alongside its contract value, approved change orders, costs incurred to date, estimated cost to complete, percent complete, revenue earned, amounts billed, and the resulting over- or underbilling.
It is the single most scrutinized document a contractor produces. A surety underwriter reads the WIP before almost anything else, looking for:
- Profit fade — jobs whose estimated margin has slipped between reporting periods, which signals weak estimating or poor field control
- Underbillings — costs in excess of billings, which usually means the contractor is financing the owner out of its own working capital
- Heavy overbillings — which can mask a job that has already burned its profit
- Backlog quality and concentration — how much remaining gross profit exists, and how much of it sits with one customer
- Job-size creep — a contract materially larger than anything the contractor has completed before
An accurate WIP is also the foundation of percentage-of-completion revenue. If the cost-to-complete estimates are unreliable, the income statement is unreliable.
Percentage-of-completion, completed-contract, or cash — which method should a contractor use?
For financial statement purposes, most construction contracts are recognized over time under ASC 606, which produces results similar to percentage-of-completion. For tax purposes, IRC §460 generally requires percentage-of-completion on long-term contracts unless the contractor qualifies for an exception.
Contractors routinely use one method for their books and another for tax, which is permitted and often advantageous.
| Method | When revenue is recognized | Who can use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Percentage-of-completion (PCM) | Progressively, as costs are incurred against total estimated costs | Required for most contractors above the gross receipts threshold | Smoother reported income; tax paid before cash may be collected |
| Completed-contract (CCM) | All at once, when the job is substantially complete | Small contractors meeting both the gross receipts and two-year tests; home construction contracts of any size | Real tax deferral; lumpy earnings that sureties dislike |
| Cash | When cash is received and paid | Contractors meeting the §448(c) gross receipts test | Simplest and most flexible; least useful for management decisions |
| Accrual excluding retainage | When earned, with retainage receivable and payable excluded | Eligible accrual-basis contractors | Defers tax on amounts not yet collectible |
The small contractor exemption turns on two tests: average annual gross receipts over the three preceding tax years, and whether the contract is expected to be completed within two years of commencement. Home construction contracts are exempt regardless of contractor size. The gross receipts figure is adjusted for inflation every year, so confirm the current threshold with your accountant rather than working from a number you read last season.
Changing methods generally requires filing Form 3115 with the IRS. Because the choice affects tax deferral, bonding capacity and reported equity simultaneously, it is one of the highest-leverage decisions a construction accounting firm makes on a contractor's behalf.
How do I choose a construction accounting firm?
Look past general firm size and evaluate the depth of the construction practice specifically — how many of its CPAs work on contractors full time, and how much of the firm's revenue depends on getting construction right.
The data in the ranking above is organized around exactly these signals. Useful questions for a first meeting:
- How many CPAs work on construction clients full time? A firm with 2,000 CPAs and 4 construction CPAs is not a construction firm.
- What share of firm revenue comes from construction? Concentration indicates commitment. The ranking above reports this figure for every firm, and the spread between generalists and true specialists is wide.
- How many staff hold the CCIFP credential? The Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional designation tests construction-specific financial practice — bonding, retainage, lien rights and contract law — rather than general accounting.
- Which sureties do you work with, and will you attend an underwriting meeting with us?
- How many states are you licensed in? This matters the moment your crews cross a line.
- Do you serve contractors our size, in our trade, with our delivery methods? Heavy civil, mechanical, specialty trade and homebuilding each raise different issues.
- Which construction ERP platforms do you support?
- Who is actually on our engagement team, and how often does that team turn over?
How much do construction accounting services cost?
Fees are driven far more by complexity than by revenue — the number of open jobs, the number of states, the level of assurance required, and whether the contractor's internal accounting produces reliable WIP.
Engagements are typically priced one of three ways:
- Fixed annual fee for a defined scope — tax return, year-end statement, a set number of planning meetings. Most common for recurring compliance work.
- Hourly for advisory, claims support, transaction work and anything unpredictable.
- Monthly retainer for outsourced accounting, fractional CFO and controller support, generally scaled to transaction volume.
The largest single cost variable is the level of assurance. A compilation costs meaningfully less than a review, and a review meaningfully less than an audit. Since the surety usually dictates which one you need, bonding requirements tend to set the accounting budget. The second largest variable is the state of your own books — a firm that has to rebuild your WIP every quarter will charge for it.
