Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) 2018 Safety Performance Report documents the dramatic impact of using proactive safety practices to reduce recordable incidents up to 85 percent, making the best-performing companies 670 percent safer than the industry average. The report is based on data gathered from ABC member companies participating in the association’s Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) that collectively have recorded more than one billion hours of work in construction, heavy construction, civil engineering and specialty trades.
Per the report, STEP participants with a robust substance abuse program or policy in place reduced their TRIR 63 percent, and companies that held site-specific safety orientations lowered their TRIR and DART rate by one-half. Firms that scored high for C-suite leadership engagement decreased their TRIR 70 percent. Additionally, holding daily toolbox talks reduced contractors’ TRIR by 62 percent, versus holding them weekly.
