Europe’s most visited landmark, Notre-Dame de Paris, is scheduled to reopen to the public on December 8, 2024. Following a devastating fire in 2019 that destroyed much of the interior and iconic wooden spire, large portions of the cathedral have been shrouded in scaffolding over the last five years for $900 million in restoration work—including interior finishes such as stained-glass windows, wrought-iron railings and the cathedral’s Grand Organ, as well as key structural elements such as vaults, buttress walls and more. Nearly 1,000 workers have been involved in the restoration, both onsite in Paris and in workshops across France.
While final interior repairs could take a bit longer to complete, visitors will once again be welcome to tour most of the famed church in December—meeting President Emmanuel Macron’s original deadline.
