The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has made $2.6 billion in grants available to states, tribes and territories to help modernize the nation’s water and wastewater infrastructure. About $1 billion will go toward the Drinking Water State Revolving fund for loans related to treating water contaminants. An additional $1.6 billion is earmarked for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund to cover wastewater infrastructure modernization and address stormwater.

Through 30 years of loan repayments and investment earnings, the revolving funds have leveraged approximately $80 billion in federal capitalization grants and state contributions to provide more than $170 billion in financial assistance to more than 39,900 water quality infrastructure projects and 14,500 drinking water projects across the country. According to the EPA, more than $743 billion is needed for U.S. water infrastructure improvements.
