The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is offering states $1.5 billion in discretionary grant funding through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program. The funds, designated through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, will be made available through September 2020.

The BUILD program is replacing the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program, which has provided roughly .5 billion to 421 projects in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands and tribal communities since 2009.

Fiscal year 2018 BUILD grants—for which applications were due July 19—will be awarded on a competitive basis for road, bridge, transit, rail, port or intermodal transportation projects that will have a significant local or regional impact. At least 30 percent of the funds will go to rural areas, according to the DOT, and the maximum grant award is $25 million, with no more than $150 million awarded to a single state.
