Following questions about whether to continue building the Vogtle 3 & 4 nuclear units near Waynesboro, Georgia, in light of $2.3 billion in extra costs, all four of the project co-owners—Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power and Dalton Utilities—voted to move forward and agreed to finalize definitive agreements that shift some of the project’s financial risk.
The new units, projected to come online in November 2021 and November 2022, are the first to be built in the United States in more than 30 years. They are expected to generate enough emission-free electricity to power approximately 500,000 homes and businesses. Bechtel is the $25 billion project’s construction manager.
