An Autodesk report conducted in partnership with Dodge Data and Analytics determined the seven most useful construction KPIs deal with change orders, schedule, labor productivity, problems discovered in construction documents, RFIs, safety and inspections, and quality and closeout. Looking ahead, data in these areas can be analyzed and used to create predictive analytics.

However, only about half of the 209 general contractors and specialty trade contractors surveyed for the report collect and use data on these KPIs in a centralized way on more than 50 percent of their projects. Notably, smaller firms were more likely to capture data than larger ones, potentially indicating a difference between larger companies’ willingness to run pilot programs and smaller companies’ success at consistently implementing new policies.

Specifically, around 50 percent of general contractors said they were holding back on regularly identifying problems in construction documents because they were concerned it would be too expensive or time consuming.
