In its seventh annual Construction Technology Report, featuring feedback on budgeting for, selecting and supporting technology, JBKnowledge found 46 percent of the nearly 3,000 contractors surveyed dedicate less than 1 percent of their overall annual sales volume to IT. On the high end, 2.5 percent of contractors spend more than 7 percent on technology.
Additionally, 65 percent of respondents have one to five people on staff who are dedicated to IT. Yet nearly 93 percent use mobile phones daily, while 62 percent also use tablets and 10 percent use smartwatches.
The largest share of respondents (21.4 percent) are using two software systems to replace spreadsheets, while 16 percent use more than six and 8 percent use zero.
In terms of technologies respondents think are positioned to give companies a strategic advantage, prefabrication came out on top at 37.8 percent, followed by AR/VR/mixed reality (28.4 percent), jobsite sensors (21.6 percent), robotics (20.9 percent), machine learning/AI (17.8 percent) and blockchain (6.8 percent).
