According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, firms in the construction industry offer health benefits to their employees just 43% of the time and retirement benefits about one-third of the time. By comparison, this is lower than the average for all corporations, which offer retirement and health benefits at least 50% of the time. When speaking with construction business owners, a common sentiment about benefits is that “they’re too costly, and my team doesn’t want them.” Owners are sometimes surprised to learn that—at least statistically and when compared to all other industries—construction workers have nearly the lowest rate of “eligible, but not participating.”
Benefits can be affordable for employers and relatively easy to administer. For instance, retirement plan providers frequently offer plans with compensation built on the assets under management. Employers that don’t currently offer benefits may consider looking into programs specifically designed for the skilled labor workforce, where firms offer holistic, end-to-end solutions designed to make enrollment and communication both effective and efficient. The evidence is clear: offering employee benefits solidifies the employer-employee partnership and sets teams up for success.
