Legislation to Reform NEPA Introduced

Associated Builders and Contractors has released a statement applauding Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) for introducing the UNSHACKLE Act, which intends to reform the National Environment Policy Act. ABC joined dozens of members of the Unlock American Investment Coalition in its call to modernize the federal permitting process.

“Modernizing the federal permitting process is a bipartisan issue, as both sides of the aisle have long identified the need for faster, more efficient permitting,” says Ben Brubeck, ABC vice president of regulatory, labor and state affairs. “Simultaneously adopting permit streamlining policies and an infrastructure bill would reduce delays and improve the predictability of the process, which would allow businesses to confidently plan and invest, enhance economic productivity and boost environmental stewardship.”

New Windows Assist Energy Performance

The Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC) has certified six new secondary window systems for commercial use. The products include four interior storm window products from LARSON® Manufacturing, two interior and two exterior products from QUANTA, as well as two window insert products from Indow® Windows.

AERC ensures that window attachments are rated and certified to better meet the energy and comfortability needs of consumers. Secondary windows, in particular, offer an opportunity to address energy performance. For more on AERC and these commercial windows, visit aercenergyrating.org.

Construction Industry Resilient and on the Rise, says Autodesk

A testament both to technology and to the resiliency of the construction industry, the “Construction Outlook 2021: Risks & Opportunities” report has been published by Autodesk in tandem with the BuildingConnected analytics team and Edward R. Zarenski from Construction Analytics.

The report has revealed a number of key industry insights, including:

  • Commercial bidding activity has surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
  • 2020 bidding activity peaked in November.
  • However, bidding activity hit an all-time high in January 2021.

The rise in bidding activity—an increase of 36% in January 2021—combined with consistent project volume, signals that delayed projects are beginning to come back online. In addition, Autodesk found that despite this bidding spike, almost 80% of teams are able to turn bids around in the standard, seven-day timeframe, which is proof positive that construction is on the mend.
