Following passage in the Utah House of Representatives and Senate in February, Gov. Gary Herbert (R) signed legislation (H.B. 142) requiring the state’s Uniform Building Code Commission to recommend building standards that include the use of mass timber in residential and commercial building construction. The recommendations must be made by Oct. 1 and must take into consideration applicable national and international standards.
Per the law, “mass timber products” refer to building components or systems that use large panelized wood construction, including wood concrete composites, laminated strand timber, laminated veneer lumber, structural composite lumber, and cross-, nail-, glue- or dowel-laminated timber.
