The Ultimate Test of Leadership

by | Apr 1, 2020

Now, more than ever, it is critical that no one in the construction industry compromises performing work safely. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that we must take a time out, assess our project conditions, change (if not completely overhaul and redesign) our safety methods, educate the workforce on these changes and deploy clear instructions to all project teams. We must check and learn daily if these new procedures are working—and if there is opportunity to improve, we will take it. If not, we must stop the work until we do.

Every day we are faced with a new moment, another decision, and ultimately a test of leadership. Construction services are essential to our everyday lives, directly or indirectly. This is privilege and honor which must be taken seriously by everyone involved in our industry.

Our industry is ready to take on the challenge as we continue to shift to a new normal and change the paradigms on our jobsites.

I encourage you to visit abc.org/coronavirus and constructionexec.com to find educational articles and links to guidelines on how to follow CDC, OSHA and other important jobsite best practices for employers. A big thank you goes out to our ABC National and chapter staff, as well as leaders at construction and consulting firms who have worked tirelessly to keep our readers up to date on rapidly changing news.

In this issue, we honor a company that consistently demonstrates its dedication to the safety and wellbeing of its employees—Tri-City Electrical Contractors, Inc., which has been named ABC’s Contractor of the Year. Get to know the company’s executive team and storied history in our cover feature.

In addition, this issue highlights all of ABC’s Excellence in Construction Award® winners. These firms will be honored at ABC’s Convention 2020, rescheduled for Aug. 17-19 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Looking ahead: Our May issue will be themed around “Worker Wellness.” Stay tuned for full coverage on contractors’ responses to the threat of COVID-19, the potential impact on the economy, and articles related to substance abuse and suicide prevention for the betterment of communities and workplaces nationwide.
