Ninety-seven percent of the International Code Council voted in favor of allowing ISO shipping containers to be used in commercial construction. The addition to Chapter 31 of the 2021 International Building Code will spell out what code officials should look for in container construction to confirm structural safety. Code officials and representatives from the shipping container building industry also will release guidelines that further explain the codes and the safe use of shipping containers.
