Safety Shifts: A Positive Result for the Construction Workplace

by | Jun 11, 2025

Over the past seven years, serious injuries in the construction workplace have declined and overall safety as improved.

A newly released seven-year analysis from ISN highlights a positive shift in workplace safety, showing a decline in serious injuries and fatalities and a growing focus on preventing high-consequence incidents. The 2023 data, included in ISN’s updated SIF Insights White Paper, reflects meaningful progress driven by improved safety culture and operational strategies like human and organizational performance.

Key positive safety shifts:
• 16% drop in SIF cases from 2022 to 2023, marking the lowest total since 2017
• Increased adoption of HOP, focusing on improving systems rather than blaming workers
• Greater emphasis on proactive safety strategies like hazard assessments and near-miss reporting
• Mature safety organizations leading the way by cultivating learning environments that prevent future incidents

These trends suggest a sustained shift toward preventing high-risk events and building stronger, more resilient safety cultures.
