For 55 years, Buist Electric has been raising the standard in the electrical industry and in the community. Its mission statement, “To honor God in all we do, consider employees’ well-being as essential, provide customers with superior service and to share our resources with those in need,” is lived out daily for brothers Larry and Roger Buist, as well as their employees and families, through the Buist Foundation and the Buist Community Assistance Center (BCAC).
Foundation caseworkers work closely with clients to help with living expenses, medical bills, auto repairs and more, focusing on independence and dignity. The BCAC provides a food pantry, clothing and household items to local families.
Additionally, the company’s “BE the Light” committee was developed to provide opportunities for employees and their families to serve others—whether it’s assembling sack suppers at Kids Food Basket, filling shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, singing Christmas carols at nursing homes or cleaning leaves out of someone’s yard. Employees are encouraged to share ideas that inspire them.
“Serving and helping others is integral to who I am. It brings me joy and satisfaction,” says Randy Vieu, electrical design engineer. “Because Buist Electric values serving others, my work and my calling function together, and it inspires me to do greater things for my company.”
When Hurricane Harvey decimated Houston, Buist Electric set up payroll deduction for employees who wanted to support relief efforts, and the company matched employees’ donations dollar for dollar. More than ,000 was donated to a church in Houston, which distributed 100 percent of the money to people needing immediate help.
Every December, employees are given two opportunities to make a financial difference. On a smaller scale, Buist Electric will provide a gift card for the employee to deliver to someone they care about who needs a financial boost through an Adopt-a-Family program.
On a larger scale, employees can submit donation requests on behalf of an organization or ministry they feel passionately about through the Employee Directed Giving Program. The company can partner with these organizations, and employees enjoy having a voice in year-end corporate giving and making a difference in a way that’s personally meaningful.
“Regardless of a person’s background or role in the company, the common denominator is a heart for service,” says Zack Onan, warehouse coordinator.
Adds Joel Blount, project manager: “To work for a company that provides such a great example to give generously and cheerfully is very refreshing, and every person is part of the team. It is a great culture and I am honored to be a part of it.”
