Work is under way on the 2,000-megawatt Wind Catcher facility in the Oklahoma panhandle—set to be the largest wind farm in the United States and the second biggest in the world. It will generate electricity for more than 1 million customers in the South Central United States via 800 turbines.
The wind farm is part of the $4.5 billion Wind Catcher Energy Connection, which consists of a 350-mile extra-high voltage power line that is expected to save customers more than $7 billion over 25 years. The Wind Catcher facility reportedly will be fully operational in mid-2020. Project partners include Invenergy and GE Renewable Energy, as well as Southwestern Electric Power and Public Service Co. of Oklahoma (two subsidiaries of American Electric Power).
