Migration Station: FENIX Museum Mixes Family History With Fresh Starts

by | Feb 11, 2026

The FENIX Museum of Migration in the port city of Rotterdam mixes industrial architecture with whimsy and hope.

The FENIX Museum of Migration opened in May 2025 in Rotterdam’s historic city harbor, repurposing a large early 20th‑century warehouse into a major cultural institution dedicated to the global story of human migration. Designed by MAD Architects in collaboration with local conservation specialists, it combines historic industrial architecture with a dramatic sculptural “tornado” of spiraling steel stairways that rise above the roof, symbolizing movement and transition. The museum’s galleries mix art, history, photography and interactive installations to explore migration’s cultural, social and emotional dimensions. Positioned in one of Europe’s most diverse port cities, it serves both as a community hub and a destination for global cultural dialogue.
