September is National Suicide Prevention Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 47,500 deaths in 2019.
Some groups are more affected than others. While the highest death rates are among American Indian/Alaska Natives and non-Hispanic White populations, other groups with high rates include veterans, people who live in rural areas and those who work in construction.
In 2019, 12 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.5 million planned a suicide attempt and 1.4 million attempted suicide. To combat these statistics and spread awareness, Associated Builders and Contractors has worked in tandem with the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention to provide social tiles, hashtags and verbiage to share all month long with ABC members and the public. #SeptemberSTANDup #ABCMeritShopProud
