Building the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic village.

The 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are bringing a city’s worth of athletes to Paris from July 26 to Aug. 11, so it’s only fitting that the competitors will live in their own custom-built city while they’re there.

Inaugurated on Feb. 29 and officially opening on July 18, the Olympic and Paralympic Village sits on the River Seine about 4 miles north of central Paris. The complex is expected to host 10,000 Olympic athletes and 5,000 Paralympic athletes along with support personnel.

Construction on the village took about three years, breaking ground at the beginning of 2021 and wrapping up at the end of 2023. The site encompasses 82 buildings with 3,000 apartments and 14,250 beds, seven training facilities, a 24-hour main restaurant capable of serving up to 3,200 people, several other restaurants, outdoor plazas, a club and more. After the Games, the apartments will be handed over to the city to use for public housing.

“Our athletes will be able to experience the Games in the best conditions, and you contributed to changing the lives of the inhabitants of the area,” French President Emmanuel Macron said during the inauguration ceremony, speaking to workers who built the village. “You are part of an adventure that will mark our century.”
