Apparently even theme parks can experience house envy. While Orlando’s Walt Disney World Resort sprawls across nearly 25,000 acres of Central Florida, Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort is squeezed into barely more than 300 acres of Southern California.
But soon Disneyland may no longer be a scrappy little Mickey Mouse operation.
The Anaheim City Council has approved updates to its zoning regulations as well as its development agreement with the Walt Disney Co. that will allow the park to proceed with a 10-year, .9-billion expansion plan.
Known as DisneylandForward, the plan is short on specifics beyond calling for Disneyland to merge its 292-acre theme-park district and 97-acre hotel district as well as to expand into a 25-acre district that’s now being used for parking.
“With updated land-use approvals through DisneylandForward,” Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock wrote on the Disney Parks Blog, “we can build new entertainment experiences for our fans, create thousands of new jobs and bring new revenue streams to Anaheim.”
