Inclusion. Diversity. Equity. It’s worth repeating these words—in this order—in a purposeful way. We as construction executives have a responsibility to be more intentional in our efforts to raise up, promote and amplify career opportunities in construction—for all Americans.
Associated Builders and Contractors, like many business organizations, has been working behind the scenes to examine how our industry can improve its hiring, recruitment and education programs and continue to prioritize inclusivity. In 2021, ABC’s diversity program is officially shifting to be renamed the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Program, as our volunteer committees work to fully embrace and articulate the complex challenges we face as leaders. Proudly, ABC will be sharing this message across the radio airwaves in Washington, D.C., throughout the summer, and we hope it resonates beyond our nation’s capital:
“At Associated Builders and Contractors, inclusion, diversity and equity aren’t just boxes to check. It’s how we get the best talent out in the construction field. We are proud to use our national, collective voice to advance diversity in construction. Visit abc.org to learn more about the unlimited possibilities of a career in construction. ABC—committed to winning work by developing the best talent on the field.”
In this issue’s cover feature, “Diversity of Ideas: Ensuring Equity in the Industry,” CE highlights the recent winners of ABC’s Diversity Excellence Awards; plus, the article shares details on the upcoming IDE Summit on June 14. Visit abc.org/diversity to learn more.
Additionally, on the topic of inclusion, please be sure to save the date for Construction Inclusion Week commencing Oct. 18, 2021. Stay tuned for more CE coverage in the months ahead.
Also, our May issue emphasizes the importance of overcoming language barriers when it comes to safety and inclusion in “Speaking My Language.” This feature article offers real-world, practical examples of how construction leaders are tackling miscommunication risks on the jobsite.
As our nation’s post-pandemic economic recovery remains top of mind, this issue offers a comprehensive Construction Financial Management Guide, including a business roundtable-style article: “Preparing for the Boom with Calm and Confidence.” Learn from accounting professionals, contractors and suppliers about their personal experiences and best practices. Now is the time to get your books in order so that busy offices are not scrambling at the end of the fiscal year.
