Do you have any techniques for when you really need to focus?

I find it difficult to carve out time to focus during the work week. I have “white space” planned on my calendar each week that protects a few hours of desk time, but it is often used to address overflow of operational items that need my attention. If I really need to focus, evenings and weekends are my best opportunity. I particularly like quiet Saturday mornings at the office—I am always amazed by how much I can accomplish with a few uninterrupted hours.

What is your favorite project you’ve worked on?

The Sydney & Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden for the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) stands out as one of my personal favorites. NOMA engaged Palmisano as the design-assist contractor to lead the 6.5-acre expansion of the sculpture garden located within New Orleans City Park’s existing landscape and lagoons. Completed in partnership with Massachusetts-based Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architects and local architect Lee Ledbetter, this expansion furthers the museum’s mission for increased community access to the arts through indoor and outdoor learning environments.

What is the first thing you would purchase with a winning lottery ticket?

A lumber mill.

What are you most looking forward to about in-person industry events?

Shaking hands and giving hugs. New Orleans is a very intimate and friendly community—we miss being together.

What is the last gift you gave someone?

I gave my mom a new easel for her birthday at the beginning of April. She is a talented artist. I give her credit for any creativity I might have.

Who is your biggest construction industry hero/heroine?

My dad, who has been a residential contractor for the past 40 years. He started bringing me to jobsites at the age of 10; I learned the trades and a lot about life during summers and weekends. I leverage that experience every day in my professional life and thank him for having the patience to continually coach me over the years.
