An estimated 1.1 million of the 7.84 million wage and salary workers in the U.S. private construction industry belonged to a union last year—a slight 0.1 percent increase compared to 2016—according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In all, 14 percent of the construction workforce was unionized in 2017.
Back in 1947, approximately 87 percent of U.S. private construction industry workers chose to join a union; by comparison, 82 percent of the 356,000 new construction jobs created in 2017 were not unionized.
