DOT Update: Hot Markets and Drone Use

Oregon is the hottest state for road construction, and 80 percent of DOTs are using drones.

With its decade-long $5.3 billion transportation bill, Oregon is the country’s hottest state for road construction, according to the Zweig Group’s 2018-2021 Insider’s Guide to the State DOT Market for AEC Firms. Washington, Colorado, Texas and Florida round out the top five states with the most favorable outlook for road construction. In contrast, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, North Dakota and Wisconsin face revenue declines and uncertainties.

In other transportation sector news, a recent survey from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials found 80 percent of DOTs are using drones for a variety of purposes, and 20 states have incorporated them into daily operations to gather photos and videos of highway construction projects. Additionally, 14 states reportedly use drones for surveying and 10 use them for bridge inspections.
