Local lawmakers voted unanimously to pass legislation mandating utilities power Washington, D.C., with 100 percent renewable electricity by 2032. Under the new policy, a task force will set aggressive energy-efficiency standards for existing buildings exceeding 10,000 square feet, and fees will go up for electricity derived from gas and coal. Additionally, the measure requires that all public transportation and privately owned fleet vehicles (e.g., Uber and Lyft) have zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2045.
