Three-quarters of the nearly 500 nonresidential construction professionals surveyed for the 2019 People In Construction Report said their corporate leaders “live by the core values of the organization,” and 80 percent trust what their boss tells them.
In other positive findings, 84 percent would recommend working at their company to a friend, and 83 percent said they would reapply for their current job. The vast majority also feel their supervisor treats them fairly and report a very high level of happiness at work (averaging 7.73 on scale of one to 10).
In terms of areas for improvement, more than 90 percent of respondents said they have the right materials and equipment to do their job well, yet only half of field supervisors reported being set up for success every day due to lack of coordination with other trades and too many changes in plans.
Additionally, 90 percent rated safety as a top priority, but only 68 of field staff said they consistently work safely. Also concerning is that 43 percent of office workers said they had more to give when asked if they were working at full capacity.
Finally, the report identified a significant gap among the workforce regarding confidence in organizational leadership, liking colleagues and maintaining a reasonable work-life balance–with office workers feeling more positively about these areas than field workers.
