Construction Union Membership Declined to 12.8 Percent in 2018

The share of union members in construction decreased from 14% in 2017 to 12.8 in 2018.

The share of union members in construction decreased from 14% in 2017 to 12.8 in 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Estimated 2018 total construction employment was 8.169 million workers, up from 7.844 million in 2017. A total of 1.048 million workers in construction belong to a union.

By comparison, the overall percentage of union membership in all industries went down from 10.7% in 2017 to 10.5% in 2018. California, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Washington contained more than half of the total union members in the United States, while accounting for only one-third of total employment nationally.
