Brokk SmartConcept™ technological features are included with the four new next generation Brokk remote-controlled demolition machines. SmartConcept consists of three features — SmartPower™, SmartDesign™ and SmartRemote™ – that improve power management, reliability, maintainability and ergonomics.
GSSI’s UtilityScan system uses sensor fusion, where coils that detect power radiated from electrical cables are fused with ground-penetrating radar (GPR). The 350 MHz antenna uses patented HyperStacking technology so users see deeper targets and operate in conditions considered too “noisy” for conventional systems. The system design includes LineTrac™ technology, which helps locate specific power sources underground, including AC power and induced radio frequency (RF) energy in utilities.
Leica Geosystems’ BLK360 portable 3D imaging laser scanner creates immersive 3D and digital reality versions of real-world spaces for the web, mobile and tablet devices and VR headsets. An integration between the Leica Geosystems BLK360 and the Matterport reality capture and cloud platform enables users to digitize spaces with the touch of a button.
Software & In the Cloud
OpenSpace AI framework gives builders and construction workers a photographic memory as they travel through time to look at the first week, month or year of a project. Workers attach the camera to a standard hard hat to record video as they walk the jobsite. The video is uploaded and OpenSpace automatically stitches together hundreds of thousands of videos frames for a 360 degree photographic view of any point of interest.
PlanGrid is introducing several new products, including: BIM in the Field, which makes BIM data accessible in PlanGrid through a plugin with Autodesk® Revit®; Tasks for managing work; Change Management to manage change orders from start to finish; Next Gen RFIs to manage the entire RFI process; and Insights product and corporate level analytics for powerful decision making. In addition, PlanGrid’s partner ecosystem has added more than 10 partners, including Holobuilder, Sensera, Stamplay and Uplift Data Partners, that integrate directly with PlanGrid’s platform.
With Leica Geosystems’ Leica Aibot, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system based on DJI’s aerial platform, users can visualize data to provide actionable information. Leica Geosystems UAV software suite supports the new UAV workflows using Leica Infinity for point cloud, digital surface model and orthophoto generation. Users can share data to Cylcone and Cloudworx, the integration of the UAV point cloud with terrestrial scan data enables users to make informed decisions.
Leica iCON construction total stations, Leica iCR70 and Leica iCR80, layout solutions for building construction, consisting of iCON construction total stations, the Leica iCON CC80 field tablet and an enhanced version of the iCON build field software, is aligned with modern Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes and provides a simplified and seamless dataflow of fully rendered 3D design models, between the office and field and vice versa. The iCR70 and iCR80 total stations offer a simple and guided setup routine designed to automatically search and identify targets, and the most stable lock onto the prism for doing construction layout of design data.
Partnerships & Acquisitions
Barton Malow Company is introducing MULE (Material Unit Lift Enhancer) technology through a partnership with Construction Robotics. MULE is a lift assist device that handles and places brick- or block-centric projects weighing up to 135 pounds in long straight lines greater than 60 feet. The two companies will collaborate on research, development and deployment of industry-changing construction technology. Barton Malow will be putting MULE to work in Michigan, allowing on-site teams to effortlessly move heavy objects while avoiding physical wear and tear.
Avitru, developer of AIA MasterSpecⓇ, and Newforma, developer of Project Center, will collaborate on content and software functionality, starting with software releases to selected shared customers. The initial release will pass submittal information in AIA MasterSpec to the submittal tools of Project Center to help Architects with the management and processing of architectural product submittals.
Bluebeam has acquired Project Atlas, a digital mapping engine that uses geo-location to organize and visualize 2D plans and construction data. The location-based orientation allows users to create and search a seamless digital map of their project that contains plans, people, material, site photos and drone imagery within highly detailed, zoomable layers.

The deadline for entering the AEC Excellence Awards 2018 is July 31. The annual competition showcases the design and construction of building and civil infrastructure projects from around the world that embrace the future of making things using BIM and Autodesk software. A new “Innovator of the Year” award will recognize a person who is transforming the design and construction industry through the use of technology, collaboration, evangelism and innovation. Industry categories in Infrastructure Design, Building Design and Construction will recognize small, medium and large size projects. Winners will be announced at the AEC Excellence Awards celebration in November at Autodesk University Las Vegas 2018.
