Following Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton in 2024, the Sanibel Causeway endured major damaged and required subsequent major restoration.

PROJECT | Sanibel Causeway Restoration

GENERAL CONTRACTOR | Joint Venture, Superior Construction and de Moya Group

CLIENT | Florida Department of Transportation

LOCATION | Sanibel Island, Florida

SCOPE | The 8 million Sanibel Causeway restoration has reached substantial completion. The three‑mile section connecting Sanibel and Captiva Islands to mainland Florida was devastated by Hurricane Ian in September 2022.

The joint venture of Superior Construction and de Moya Group rebuilt and enhanced the causeway while keeping two lanes open throughout. At peak, up to 26 crews handled piling, earthwork, drainage, rebar, concrete and paving. The rebuilt structure includes nearly 750,000 square feet of steel sheet pile walls, nearly 128,000 tons of granite armor stone, elevated seawalls, upgraded stormwater drainage, 19,500 tons of asphalt, and extensive concrete barriers and caps.

These resilience features were tested during 2024’s Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton: finished sections remained intact while incomplete areas saw washouts. This project not only restores vital connectivity but significantly bolsters the causeway’s defenses against future storms.
