While LEGO has had success in recent years introducing building sets for adults, a Miami company is taking the idea to a whole new level. RENCO USA has introduced a building system that uses LEGO-style interlocking components made of recycled glass fibers, recycled plastic, resin and stone—including blocks, beams, columns and joists.
According to RENCO, which is short for “renewable composite,” its products are 23 times stronger than concrete and rated to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. The company specifically developed the inexpensive, easy-to-assemble system—which recently was named “construction product design of the year” in the 2023 BLT Built Design Awards—to be used in building more affordable housing in climate-unstable Florida.
“We now have the chance of a lifetime to revolutionize the future of construction,” says Tom Murphy Jr., co-founder of RENCO USA. “This means creating homes that are not only sustainable and resilient, but built to endure for generations yet to come.”
