According to ADP Research’s Today at Work, 20% of workers in construction and related trades report using AI daily, with another 29% using it weekly.
With AI adoption growing organically across the construction industry, the question is no longer when the technology may arrive, but whether employers are equipped to handle the shift thoughtfully.
Keep People at the Center
The skilled trades run on experience and judgment, and AI works best when able to support those strengths. Positioning it as a tool that helps augment the work contractors are able to do rather than a replacement is the first step in encouraging adoption. For example, estimators can use it to surface cost trends for clients more quickly, which can improve their overall productivity and time to complete various tasks.

Showing how AI can reduce the administrative burden or help prevent scheduling conflicts gives employees a concrete and relatable reason to engage with the technology. That message should reach both office staff and field leaders, including foremen and superintendents who influence day-to-day adoption.
Communicating job security and maintaining transparency are also important parts of that message. Workers who feel safe in their jobs are six times more likely to be fully engaged, 6.3 times more likely to be motivated and committed, and 3.3 times more likely to say they are highly productive.
Invest in Practical Training
According to ADP Research, only 18% of workers feel strongly that their employer is investing in the skills they need for the future. When it comes to AI, employees are looking to their organizations for practical guidance on how to apply the technology to their existing work. Frequent, short and focused training sessions can be enough to help them build up technological confidence.
Construction’s multigenerational workforce creates a natural opportunity as well. With five generations at work, younger employees often arrive comfortable with AI-enabled tools, while more experienced workers bring jobsite knowledge and judgment. Pairing them for reciprocal mentorship opportunities can help both groups learn from each other, strengthening organizational collaboration.
Skills development should also be broadly accessible across the organization. Online learning platforms can provide up-to-date information on the latest safety and compliance requirements while providing essential training on topics like equipment operation and project management for workers of all ages and career stages.
Reduce Administrative Burden
Managing documentation, compliance reporting and time-tracking can consume significant bandwidth for contractors. The teams who manage these core business functions are also looking to free up time to innovate with ADP’s latest Potential of Payroll report finding that 37% of payroll teams are actively scoping out ways to automate administrative workflows using AI. One of the strongest use-cases for AI tools is the ability to free teams to focus less on manual processing and more on higher-value work.
Regulatory complexity is also increasing. Some states have introduced rules governing how AI is used in hiring and employment decisions. Illinois, for example, requires employers to notify employees if AI is used in recruiting, hiring or promotions. Colorado has identified AI use in compensation and performance management as high risk, requiring risk management programs and regular assessments.
