As a Nationally Certified Recovery Friendly Workplace—and the first Recovery Friendly association—ABC recently had the opportunity to join other Recovery Friendly Workplaces and leaders from across the country at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Recovery Month Celebration recognizing the importance of recovery and the role workplaces can play in supporting it.
“It was great to be a part of the continued momentum around Recovery Friendly Workplaces,” days DeAnna Thomas, ABC vice president of human resources. “I hope ABC can continue to be an advocate for RFW and support the call to action for chapters and members as this important work moves forward.”

Hosted by ONDCP—with special thanks to Director Sara Carter, Dr. Roneet Lev, Peter Gaumond, Kemp Chester, Vanessa Woodbury—the day was spent recognizing the importance of recovery and the role workplaces can play in supporting individuals and communities.
Thomas says, “Participating in the White House Recovery Friendly Workplaces event was an incredible honor and a proud moment for Associated Builders and Contractors. As the first association to become certified as a Recovery Friendly Workplace, we recognize the importance of leading by example. This achievement was made possible through a true collaboration between our Health, Safety, Environment and Workforce Development, and Human Resources teams. It reflects our shared commitment to creating a workplace where employees feel supported, recovery is respected and stigma is reduced.”

Being a recovery friendly workplace means creating a work environment where people know their company recognizes the importance of recovery, that it is okay to ask for help and what resources are available to them and their loved ones.
“My hope is that ABC’s leadership will inspire other chapters and member firms to embrace recovery-friendly practices and recognize that supporting employees is not just good for business,” says Thomas. “It’s the right thing to do.”
