What’s the biggest challenge facing the construction industry in 2022?
Continuing to live with COVID-19 and all the uncertainty that surrounds it. Supply-chain disruptions and labor availability still remain major challenges as well.
What’s your New Year’s resolution?
ABC members have done well focusing on the occupational safety hazards in our industry. In 2022, I resolve to make a positive impact on the mental health of my employees. In my opinion, mental health has become the number-one non-occupational hazard we face in construction.
What do you do to wind down after work?
I have a 40-minute drive home, which allows me the opportunity to wind down before I get home. That 40 minutes allows me to think through the day’s events and mentally prepare for the next day. Once home, I’m catching up with my family, watching the news and giving my dog some attention.
What do you work toward in your free time?
When free time comes around, I really try to enjoy the day and not let time control me. In that free time, I am outdoors as much as possible. I find anything that has to do with working the land is therapy for me.
What is your main goal for 2022?
The ABC Health & Safety Committee has put a lot of work into the Total Human Health Initiative. I’m looking forward to implementing total human health into our world-class safety management system—ABC’s STEP program—and continuing to raise the awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.
If you could have lunch with one deceased person, who would it be?
I’m a nostalgic at heart and there are many famous people that I would love to speak with over lunch, but if I had to choose one, it would be a dear friend I lost unexpectedly many years ago. He left behind a wife and two infant children. Having the opportunity to share with him how proud he would be of his children and the successful adults they have become would be incredible.
What would you say is the greatest personal accomplishment of your life to date?
My family.
