Kauno Dokas looks like a typical—if unusually sleek and stylish—office building in Kaunas, Lithuania. It’s what you can’t see that makes it so different.
The four-story, 120,000-square-foot Kauno Dokas is free-cooled by the waters of the Neris River, on whose banks the building sits. This unique process, when combined with a self-generated solar-power system, significantly reduces Kauno Dokas’ carbon footprint.
“Kauno Dokas looks like it is levitating in the air or standing on legs through which Neris River is clearly visible,” says architect Gustė Kančaitė. “It is characterized by lightness, rhythmicity and dynamic division as if the waves of the river.”
